Visiting Professor Program Roles and Responsiblities

The following information outlines the roles and responsibilities of each party involved in the planning and implementation of the Visiting Professor Program.

HOST

The applicant(s) will be the Local Organizer/Host. The responsibilities of the Host are as follows:

  • Submit a completed Visiting Professor Program application. The application submission is to include a two- to three-day program with timetable, suggested faculty names, as well as potential program dates. The submission must also include the current CV of the Host.
  • Provide comfortable lodging, meals, local transportation, and ensure safety for the Visiting Professor(s) while in the host country.
  • Provide venue and facilities, printing of program materials, translation/interpretation (when necessary) and other logistical needs related to the program.
  • Publicize the MDS program to the local medical and healthcare community.
  • Facilitate in publicizing MDS by encouraging membership applications and, as appropriate, establishing MDS affiliate societies. At the program this may include display, projection and distribution of MDS materials and other actions as recommended by MDS.
  • Ensure that the program evaluation forms and Regional Educational Needs Assessment Surveys (where applicable) are completed by attendees for submission to the MDS International Secretariat within 60 days of the course date. Evaluation forms may be translated if necessary.
  • Write a short informational article about the program for publication in the MDS newsletter, "Moving Along."

FACILITATOR

For some programs a facilitator from the MDS Education Committee may be appointed to assist the Host in planning the program, outlining the educational objectives, and implementing the program. The Host may also choose to request a facilitator be appointed from the MDS Education Committee.

VISITING PROFESSORS

Visiting Professors are members of MDS and selected based on their level of expertise in their relative fields.

The responsibilities of the Professors are as follows:

  • Discuss the presentation content and format with the Host to ensure that all educational objectives are appropriate and achievable
  • Prepare and present talks and materials in a manner that is relevant to, and comprehensible by, the participants from the host country/region
  • Meet all timelines provided by the Host, particularly those related to the submission of program materials for printing and distribution to attendees
  • Facilitate in publicizing the MDS by encouraging membership applications and, as appropriate, establishing MDS affiliate societies. At the program this may include display, projection and distribution of MDS materials and other actions as recommended by the MDS
  • Assist in ensuring that evaluation forms and Regional Educational Needs Assessment Surveys (where applicable) are completed by course attendees
  • Submit a final summary report of the program to the MDS Education Committee, via the MDS International Secretariat which should include an overview of the program, including its strengths and areas for improvement. This report will not be published.
     
MDS INTERNATIONAL SECRETARIAT

The responsibilities of the MDS International Secretariat are to:

  • Process incoming Visiting Professor Program applications according to internal procedure, while keeping applicants informed of their application status
  • Coordinate with the MDS Education Committee and Regional Section Education Committee by facilitating the application process prior to approval and by providing reporting on the outcomes of the event and the final summary reports by both Host and Faculty.


    Coordinate the participation of MDS faculty by:

  • Issuing formal invitations
  • Facilitating communication between the MDS faculty and Host
  • Arranging MDS faculty transportation to the host country
  • Providing the MDS faculty with the most recent summary of Educational Needs Assessment Survey data (where applicable) to assist in preparing lectures
  • Providing the MDS faculty with the MDS logo to create a slide “Sponsored by MDS” to be included with their lecture slides. Alternatively, providing the MDS faculty with a short slide set of information on MDS Membership/Waived Dues Membership and appropriate Regional Section activities
  • Processing honoraria payments following the course
     

    Coordinate with Host to:

  • Facilitate communication with MDS faculty
  • Provide appropriate MDS Regional Section logo for use in local marketing
  • Sending a shipment of handouts on Membership/Waived Dues Membership, MDS Education Activities and Regional Section activities
  • Provide Host with program evaluation forms and Regional Educational Needs Assessment Surveys (where applicable)
  • Assist in marketing the program to MDS members living in the MDS Regional Section where the program is taking place
  • Tabulate and summarize the results of the completed program evaluations and Regional Educational Needs Assessment Surveys (where applicable). A summary of the results should be provided to the Host upon request
