Course Description

Physiotherapy Summer School takes place in Leuven, Belgium, September 8-10, 2016.The Allied Health Professionals School is a two and a half day course aimed at qualified physiotherapists who want to specialize in treating patients with Parkinson’s disease or atypical Parkinsonism.

The educational objectives are intended to improve the evaluation, clinical reasoning and treatment skills of graduated physiotherapists in order to optimize the delivery of exercise programs for patients with Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. Rehabilitation theory and practice will be evidence-based or founded on expert clinical opinion as appropriate.

The European Evidence-based guidelines for physiotherapy will be used as a framework and applied to different levels of the ICF-model (the International Classification of Functioning). Course members will be exposed to patient demonstrations during dual task training, a relatively novel method of treatment. In addition, clinical tuition will be based on cases filmed on video and described on paper.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, you should be able to accomplish the following:

  • Select relevant assessment tools to evaluate PD patients’ problems
  • Apply relevant clinical tests and interpret the outcome using an evidence-based framework
  • Apply clinical reasoning skills taking into account disease stage, severity and cognitive ability
  • Design appropriate exercise programs which address and target the needs of PD patients and take prognostic variables into account
  • Progress and dose the exercise programs appropriately
  • Implement an evidence-based approach to treatment
  • Develop positive attitudes towards exercise interventions for neurodegenerative disease
  • List criteria outlining when to refer PD patients to other health professionals as part of a multidisciplinary approach
  • Explain the complexity of delivering training interventions and the how to optimize compliance
