MDS-ES Summer School for Young Neurologists
7th Annual MDS-ES Summer School for Young Neurologists
Barcelona, Spain - July 18-20, 2014
The 2014 Summer School for Young Neurologists took place in Barcelona, Spain, July 18 - 20, 2014. Young neurologists interested in training in the field of movement disorders, as well as those who already have had some experience in movement disorders, were taught by an MDS-ES international faculty of senior movement disorder specialists.
The summer school course design used several educational methods: Students attended large lectures and panel discussions with question and answer sessions, were involved in group presentations and case discussions, and worked with movement disorders patients and presented their own case-study videos.
The first day focused on the basics of parkinsonism and hyperkinetic movement disorders. The second day allowed participants not only to examine patients, but also to share their own patient videos with their fellow participants. The third day covered simple and complex patient management issues, including administration of botulinum toxin and neuroimaging.
At the conclusion of the course participants were able to:
Examine a patient with a movement disorder
Reach a diagnosis on straightforward movement disorders cases
Propose a differential diagnosis on more complex movement disorders patients
Present a movement disorders case history
Design, review and modify a patient treatment plan
This course was recommended for young neurologists within five years of their completion of general neurological training who are interested in specializing in movement disorders and young neurologists and who are already training in movement disorders.
