MDS EDUCATIONAL MISSION

MDS is committed to assisting physicians and healthcare professionals in countries where Movement Disorders specialists are under-represented. In accordance with its mission, MDS supports Movement Disorder-focused educational opportunities in regions of the world that may not have adequate available resources. By supporting the educational needs of physicians and healthcare professionals in these countries, MDS hopes to enhance the quality of treatment and care provided to the Movement Disorder patients.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Basic Movement Disorders (BMD) Curriculum is an overview of movement disorders and a clinical approach to the evaluation and management of common movement disorders. This curriculum is specially developed for trainees, internists, general neurologists and other clinicians interested in acquiring basic understanding of movement disorders.

  • Basal ganglia anatomy and physiology
  • Phenomenology of Movement Disorders
  • Etiology and pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease
  • Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of Parkinson's disease
  • Management of early Parkinson's disease
  • Management of Advanced Parkinson's disease
  • Tremor
  • Dystonias
  • Chorea, athetosis and ballism
  • Myoclonus
  • Gait disorders
  • Restless legs syndrome and movement disorders in sleep
  • Management of MSA, PSP, and CBGD
  • Tics and Tourette Syndrome
  • Drug-Induced Parkinsonism (DIP)
  • Psychogenic Movement Disorders

PROGRAM APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Interested organizations or institutions must first apply to MDS to request permission to use the curriculum. Licensing fees may apply. The following options will be available:

  1. Application for use of Basic MD course material - no funding needed from MDS
  2. Application for use of Basic MD course material - funding requested from MDS (only for countries where Movement Disorder specialists are under-represented)

Once the application has been submitted and reviewed, an MDS Secretariat staff member will contact you about your application.

To protect the scientific integrity of the program and to prevent the perception of industry bias, the following guidelines for pursuing support are to be followed:

  • No profit is to be generated from the Basic Movement Disorder Course.
  • Industry support must come in the form of unrestricted educational grants.

In the unanticipated event that a profit is generated from the Basic Movement Disorders Course, the money will be utilized to cover the costs of MDS Memberships for hospital and academic institution Department Heads. These memberships will be full MDS memberships, with an accompanying subscription to the MDS "Movement Disorders" journal.

Further, if registration fees are charged for participants, they should be nominal. The MDS should be informed of any registration fee and its amount.

The Movement Disorder Society accepts no responsibility for any debt incurred by the planning and implementation of the Basic Movement Disorder Course, and bears no liability for any event.
