Continuing Medical Education
Purpose
There is no laboratory or neuroimaging test that indicates a diagnosis of dystonia. It is only through the clinical examination and an awareness of the clinical features that the diagnosis is reached. As a result, many patients with dystonia are not diagnosed in a timely fashion, leading to inappropriate referrals, excessive testing and prolonged periods without treatment
Recommended Audience
This course is recommended for general neurologists and physiatrists who are interested in learning more about dystonia.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- List the most frequent forms of dystonia;
- List the diagnostic criteria for dystonia;
- Describe common presenting symptoms of dystonia;
- Discuss the differential diagnosis of dystonia;
- Describe common pitfalls in diagnosing dystonia;
- Outline treatment strategies for dystonia.

MDS Disclosure and Resolution of Conflict of Interest Policy
It is the policy of The Movement Disorder Society (MDS) to ensure balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor in all MDS sponsored educational activities. All planning committee and faculty members participating in any MDS sponsored activity are required to disclose to MDS and the activity audience all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest. Relevant relationships are defined as financial relationships in any amount occurring within the past 12 months. This pertains to relationships with pharmaceutical companies, biomedical device manufacturers, or other corporations whose products or services are related to the field of Movement Disorders. This disclosure will be provided to all participants prior to the beginning of the CME activity. The intent of this policy is not to prevent a speaker with a potential conflict of interest from making a presentation. It is merely intended that any potential conflict should be identified and resolved prior to the activity, so that there is no commercial bias present in the presentation. Failure by any faculty or planning committee member to disclose all such relationships will result in their inability to participate in the CME activity.
Credit Designation
The Movement Disorder Society designates this educational activity for a maximum of 5.25 AMA PRA Category 1 ™ credits. Physicians should only claim credits commensurate with their participation in the activity.
