Accreditation and CME
Accreditation Statement
The Movement Disorder Society is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide CME to physicians.
Designation Statement
The Movement Disorder Society designates this educational activity for a maximum of 19 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Course Description
The conference will contain an overview of all aspects of psychogenic movement disorders and show similarities and differences with other conversion disorders. Epidemiology, differential diagnosis, pathophysiology, psychiatric aspects, and therapy will be covered. An attempt will be made to cover each topic in considerable depth, building on the knowledge base developed in the prior conference held in 2003. The meeting will consist of didactic lectures, posters and much discussion.
Needs Statement
Psychogenic movement disorders are those that have no known basis in the physiology of the motor system and therefore are often thought to have psychiatric cause. In various studies it turns out that up to 20% of new patients seen in movement disorder centers are diagnosed with psychogenic movement disorders. The ability to make a diagnosis rests on the presence of a multitude of clinical clues and therapeutic action should be taken as early as possible. The management of psychogenic movement disorders is fraught with difficulties. Empathy and a non-judgmental manner are essential in dealing with patients, and a neurobiological explanation of the symptoms may help to foster trust, acceptance, understanding and recovery.
Target Audience
Neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, physiologist, physiatrists, cognitive and clinical neuroscientists
Learning Objectives
The primary objective is for physicians to recognize psychogenic movement disorders and to
- identify how best to diagnose these patients
- describe the pathophysiology of the condition
- implement strategies to effectively relate to the patients
- evaluate the latest treatment possibilities
- state the current research opportunities
