Workshop Description
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) affects approximately 10% of the population and is frequently under-diagnosed in a clinical setting. Parkinson disease affects approximately 1.5 million people in the United States. This course will use a case based approach to enhance knowledge of RLS and PD diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment. Each case series will consist of 2-4 videotape case presentations and present practical points concerning diagnosis, evaluation and treatment that can be applied by the busy practitioner in an office setting. There will be ample opportunity for discussion and questions from the participants, with a focus on the take-home message from each case.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the clinical features and diagnostic criteria for RLS and periodic limb movements
  • Differentiate between the clinical diagnosis of RLS and sleep phenomenons such as PLMS
  • Describe the diagnostic workup for RLS
  • List the therapeutic approaches to RLS for mild to moderate or intermittent symptoms
  • List the therapeutic approaches to RLS for moderate to severe symptoms
  • Discuss augmentation and rebound
  • Identify the clinical features of PD
  • Recognize features atypical for PD
  • Discuss issues related to initiation of treatment in PD
  • Discuss the management of motor complications
  • Identify non-motor manifestations of PD

Recommended Audience
This course is recommended for general neurologists, primary care physicians and physicians-in-training.
