Message from the Editors

By Marcelo Merello, MD, PhD and Hubert Fernandez, MD
Co-Medical Editors, MDS Website

Welcome to the June-July edition of the MDS Website!

We are now almost two weeks from the beginning of the MDS Buenos Aires meeting and we look forward to your participation. If you are attending the Congress, be sure to stop by the Internet Café, located on the lower level of the hotel in the San Isidro Room/Exhibit Hall. Check out the MDS website for information about the Congress as well as the latest news and features about Movement Disorders. We expect to have an exciting meeting.

Driving and Parkinson's disease

The theme for June-July is "Driving and Parkinson's disease." Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have progressive motor, cognitive, visual processing, and emotional deficits that may affect safe driving behavior. The legislative procedures to screen drivers with PD vary greatly across the world and represent an important issue.

Featured articles have been contributed by two of our colleagues: Ergun Y. Uc, MD, Associate Professor of Neurology, University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinic, Iowa City, Iowa USA; and Ester Klimkeit, adjunct senior lecturer position in the School of Psychology and Psychiatry at Monash University, Victoria, Australia. Their comments highlight the need to assess driving ability in PD regularly and in a standardized fashion, in addition to the need for future studies to explore the motor and nonmotor factors leading to impaired driving performance.

This month's Editor's Choice Article is "Imaging Essential Tremor" by Ioannis U. Isaias, et al. The podcast summary and review is provided by Joseph Jankovic, MD, Professor of Neurology and Director, Parkinson Disease Center and Movement Disorders Clinic at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas USA.
