Alfredo Berardelli,
Chairman
Rome, July 2009
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the MDS-ES Section of the MDS Web site. The mission of The Movement Disorder Society-European Section (MDS-ES) is to represent and promote The Movement Disorder Society (MDS) and its mission in Europe. If you are an MDS member resident in Europe (see sidebar) you are automatically a member of the European Section, and entitled to vote for our Executive Committee and Officers, and to participate in all our activities. Our European Section Executive Committee is here to steer the direction of the Section, but your input is needed, valued and welcomed!
I am greatly honoured to be Chairman of the MDS European Section for the term 2009-2011. I look forward enthusiastically to building on the current activities and success of the Section, and, through serving MDS members in Europe, to increasing the profile of The Movement Disorder Society throughout our Region. I am fortunate to have an excellent European Section Executive Committee in place to support my Chairmanship.
Education is a prime activity for the Section, and we are starting to explore ways to establish working contacts with national Movement Disorders groups, and to support their local educational activities. Movement Disorders teaching for general neurologists is provided through our formal collaboration with the European Federation of Neurological Societies.
Our new European Education Committee is chaired by Joaquim Ferreira. We aim to provide education throughout Europe, but in particular, the Committee will explore opportunities to reach our members in the Southern Mediterranean countries, as well supporting education for physicians in Eastern Europe. We want to be guided by the needs of our members, so if you see a need for local or regional Movement Disorders education that would be enhanced by the support of the MDS European Section, then please let us know! Resources are available to members through the MDS-ES Education Fund for Underserved Areas in Europe, Visiting Professor Program and the MDS Ambassador Program. To take advantage of any of these educational activities, please click on the links provided for more information and program application forms.
An aim of my Chairmanship is to expand the number of MDS members in all countries in Europe, particularly where there are currently few or no members, and to this end the new ESEC is already considering how to promote the benefits of membership and to recruit new members.
Our successful working relationship with the European Federation of Neurological Societies is one of the major achievements of our Section, and we will work to strengthen and enhance this collaboration over the next two years. We will continue to look into ways to implement mutually helpful collaborations with other European Societies, both in neurology and the other medical specialties who manage patients with Movement Disorders.
So, we have a very full, but a very enjoyable agenda to occupy the next two years!
In closing, may I remind you of the excellent Movement Disorders program that has been arranged by the Section for the EFNS Congress in Florence, 12-15th September 2009. This Congress provides an opportunity to participate in Advanced and Basic Movement Disorders Teaching Courses on the Saturday, with a further full day of Movement Disorders activities on the Monday, whilst also enjoying two days of updates in all areas of neurology. I hope to see you there.
Alfredo Berardelli,
Chairman
