The Movement Disorders Program represents one priority project of the Besta Neurological Institute. This program provides a comprehensive service to patients with Parkinson’s disease, parkinsonian syndromes and other Movement disorders. All the key diagnostic and treatment tools are available in house. The program is connected to a Higher Education degree on Movement Disorders (Director Prof. Albanese) of 1-year duration that confers a university-level diploma. Fellows are welcome to attend our department for a period of 3 months or more and to apply for the Movement Disorders degree if they wish to stay at least 9 months.
The following facilities are available in connection with the Movement Disorders program:
• The Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorders clinic has 15 in-patient beds and daily out-patient clinics with specialized tracks (Parkinson disease, parkinsonian syndromes, dementia, dystonia, chorea, botulinum toxin, DBS follow-up, etc.).
• The Autonomic nervous system lab provides up-to-date investigations into autonomic functions.
• The gait and movement lab is dedicated to investigations on motor phenomenology using the new SMART-D high frequency digital system.
• An average of 3 patients are operated each month in the functional neurosurgery program (integrated with the Department of Neurosurgery).
• A special rehabilitation program is dedicated to patients with movement disorders and combined with the botulinum toxin clinic.
• A neurophysiological laboratory is dedicated to movement disorders patients.
• The genetic section cooperates to the study of several types of movement disorders (parkinsonian syndromes, dystonia, choreas, tourette, etc.).
• The pediatrics department cooperates strictly on childhood-onset forms of movement disorders.
