The First Movement Disorders Learning Camp in Tagaytay City, Philippines
Contributed by Course Directors – Roland Dominic Jamora and Cid Diesta
The first ever Movement Disorders Learning Camp in the Philippines took place on September 14-15, 2013 at Taal Vista Hotel, Tagaytay City. This camp was organized by the Movement Disorder Society of the Philippines (MDSP) and supported by the Asian and Oceanian Section of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS-AOS).
The course was attended by 174 neurologists and neurologists-in-training from around the Philippines. This 2 half-day course was intended to introduce attendees, especially the trainees, to the basics of movement disorders. The course format followed the Parkinson and Movement Disorders (PMD) Course, including lectures and video presentations.
The course directors were Dr. Dominic Jamora and Dr. Cid Diesta. Dr. Shen Yang Lim (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), the international faculty member, generously gave 3 lectures on the diagnosis, differential diagnosis and management of PD and chorea. The local faculty included Dr. Lillian Lee (Quezon City, Dystonia), Dr. Raymond Rosales (Manila, Basal ganglia anatomy and phenomenology), Dr. Dominic Jamora (Manila, Tremors and management of parkinson plus syndromes), and Dr. Cid Diesta (Makati City, Movement disorders in sleep). Dr. Rosalia Teleg (Quezon City, Myoclonus), Dr. Arlene Ng (Quezon City, Psychogenic movement disorders), Dr. Criscely Go (Manila, Tics and Tourette syndrome), Dr. Anthony Piano (Las Pinas City, Gait and ataxia), and Dr. Rafael Palacio (Batangas, Etiopathogenesis of PD).
Lectures on the first day focused on the anatomy of the basal ganglia, phenomenology, chorea, tics and psychogenic movement disorders. On the second day, gait disorder and ataxia and other hyperkinetic movement disorders (dystonia, myoclonus, tremor, and restless legs) were discussed. At the end of the first day, there was a video session moderated by Dr. Cid Diesta. Adult and child neurology cases were presented by neurology trainees. The panel consisted of the faculty (Dr. Shen Yang Lim, Dr. Raymond Rosales, Dr. Anthony Piano, Dr. Rafael Palacio, Dr. Lillian Lee). Audience participation was encouraged.
The course was well received by the attendees. The Movement Learning Camp was a great success for the MDSP and the MDS-AOS.
