MDS Allied Health Professional Summer School: Physiotherapy for People with PD

Course Report

The first MDS Allied Health Professional Summer School: Physiotherapy for people with Parkinson's disease took place in Nijmegen, The Netherlands on July 4-6, 2013.

MDS-ES Summer School 2013 in the NetherlandsThe MDS Allied Health Professional Summer School was developed in collaboration with MDS-ES and ParkinsonNet, and the city of Nijmegen welcomed the 48 course attendees with wonderful summertime weather. The application process for the summer school was very competitive, but those who could not attend this time are most welcome for a future course and invited to apply again.

The course format resembled previous Summer Schools, including lectures and practical patient demonstrations. Day 1 focused on topic presentations and discussion centered around Parkinson's disease, such as the pathology, clinical picture, medical treatment options, motor learning, how to ensure a continuum of care in a multidisciplinary and self-care perspective, how to use the 1st European Guidelines for Physiotherapy in Parkinson's disease, and how to optimize Parkinson's care through reorganization. At the end of the first day, there was a video dinner led by Prof. Bastiaan Bloem.

Day 2 focused on history-taking, physical assessment and interventions on the core areas of physical therapy in Parkinson's disease, working in plenary and parallel sessions. At the end of the second day, much to everyone's delight the attendees were treated to a tango lesson dinner. Finally, Day 3 included a small groups patient practicum, where participants were able to examine patients under the guidance of movement disorders specialists, and complex cases were discussed.

The faculty included top global experts on physiotherapy: Prof. Dr. Giovanni Abbruzzese, MD (Italy), Dr. Walter Maetzler, MD (Germany), Prof. Dr. Meg Morris, PT (Australia), Prof. Dr. Alice Nieuwboer, PT (Belgium), Prof. Dr. Ann Ashburn, PT (UK), Mariella Graziano, BSc (Hons) (Luxembourg), Ruth Hagestuen, RN, MA (USA), Dr. Colleen Canning, PT (Australia), and Maarten Nijkrake, PhD, PT (Netherlands).

The attendees were very pleased with the course, which included three intense days of training. The first Allied Health Professional Summer School in Nijmegen was a tremendous success, and we look forward to holding future physiotherapy-focused Summer Schools in coming years (course directors Bastiaan Bloem, Samyra Keus and Marten Munneke).
