“Parkinson’s is not Witchcraft”: Fighting stigma in Uganda

“We grew up happy like any other kids until my mom started experiencing the tremors.”

Because the local community in their home of Uganda believed the Parkinson’s disease symptoms Kabugo Hannington Tamale’s mother developed were contagious or a curse, she was neglected when she most needed care.

To make sure others didn’t experience the hardship his mother did, Hannington began dispelling the myths in his community, and eventually educating the health care professionals who could reach more patients.

Moving Along Editorial Board member Dr. Indu Subramanian sat down with him to discuss the advocacy work with his organization Parkinson's si buko Uganda (Parkinson’s is Not Witchcraft), which earned him a Robin A. Elliott Award for Outstanding Community Service from the World Parkinson Coalition.

Learn about Hannington’s organization, Parkinson's si buko Uganda.
