PaWei

Target population: Patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) or other movement disorders such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), multiple system atrophy (MSA), etc.

PaWei is a PD management smartphone app. It is an integrated app designed for people with movement disorders, PD in particular. For assessment, PaWei app focuses on the following aspects: 

  • Self-reported questionnaire, including Parkinson Disease Questionnaire 8 (PDQ-8), medication questionnaire etc.  

  • Voice analysis: Patients are asked to perform several vocal tasks and record their voice via smartphone, including sustained vowel (/a:/, /i:/, /o:/, /u:/ namely) and counting numbers (from 1 to 10, from 10 to 1 namely). The recording will be assessed acoustically, and acoustic analysis results will be provided to the patients shortly after they upload the recording, including F0/maximum F0, mean of energy values/maximum energy values, percent of Jitter, percent of Shimmer, mean of harmonics to noise ratio and ratio of all voiced segments and whole speech.  

  • Video analysis: Patients are asked to perform finger-tapping test (MDS-UPDRS 3.4), pronation-supination movements of hands (MDS-UPDRS 3.6) and gait (MDS-UPDRS 3.10) according to the demonstration video and record their movement via smartphone. 

It also includes modules for patient condition information, medical speclialist listings, online consultation, medication purchasing, patient education, and a forum.

User interfaces: Patients. Healthcare providers can access information with patients’ consent.
