Overview of Movement Disorders for Physicians, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals in Burundi and East Africa

Details:

A two-day in-person course for 40 participants across physicians, nurses and allied health professionals.

In addition to didactic lectures and Q&A sessions, the course will include patient examinations, panel discussions, and case-based discussions. A practical demonstration will be provided on how to examine a patient with Parkinson’s disease, following the Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS). 

To enhance interaction between participants and faculty, the first session will be led by French-speaking faculty members to help reduce potential language barriers and create a welcoming and supportive learning environment. 

Learning Objectives 

• Identify the phenomenology of parkinsonian syndromes. 
• Improve recognition and diagnosis of hyperkinetic movement disorders. 
• Enhance the management of movement disorders through lectures covering Parkinson’s disease, as well as tic disorders, chorea, tremor and dystonia syndromes. 
• Promote multidisciplinary involvement of nurses and allied health professionals (AHPs). 
• Gain guidance and support for career development, particularly for junior participants. 
• Contribute to the development of research initiatives and strengthen collaboration across countries.
