Highlights of the 4th Egyptian Movement Disorders Conference & School: Advancing continuous education

The Egyptian Chapter of the Egyptian Society of Neurology successfully had the 4th Egyptian Movement Disorders Conference & School in Cairo from November 19-21, 2026.

Supported by the MDS-African Section, the event welcomed three esteemed international experts — Prof. Cristian Falup-Pecurariu, Prof. Angelo Antonini, and Prof. Zakiyah Aldaajani — along with a distinguished group of Egyptian faculty members. This year’s meeting drew 185 neurologists from universities, institutes, and cities across Egypt. Importantly, the conference funded registration and accommodation for 80 young neurologists, reinforcing its strong commitment to training the next generation.

The pre-conference school on day one offered foundational and advanced lectures on hypokinetic and hyperkinetic movement disorders, delivered by leading national and international specialists. The program also included video case presentations from several Egyptian universities and a practical hands-on botulinum toxin injection session.

Across the second and third days, the conference addressed a wide range of topics, including medical and surgical management, advanced treatments, pediatric movement disorders, and other key updates in the field. Plenary lectures and poster presentations showcased the growing strength of Egyptian research teams. The final day also featured a poster session dedicated to young neurologists and an interactive botulinum toxin workshop.

A number of new and impactful sessions were introduced this year, including a grand rounds session with two in-person patients, a panel discussion on recently introduced therapies in Egypt, and a debate-style controversy session.

Feedback from participants and faculty was overwhelmingly positive, praising the comprehensive program, engaging sessions, relevant hot topics, high-caliber lectures from MDS experts, and the valuable junior-led case discussions.

The enthusiastic participation of Egyptian neurologists reflects the essential role of this annual meeting in addressing educational needs and strengthening expertise in movement disorders. The Egyptian Movement Disorders Conference continues to serve as a strong model for national educational initiatives in Africa, especially with the support of the MDS.

The partnership with the MDS-African Section through the Outreach Program, combined with the efforts of Egyptian movement disorders leaders, significantly contributed to the success of the meeting and further increased awareness of MDS resources and educational opportunities.
