MDS offers first Neuromodulation School in Spanish

The MDS-PAS 4th School of Neuromodulation of Movement Disorders course was in the FLENI auditorium in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 5-6, 2024. Directed by Marcelo Merello (Argentina) and Gabriel Arango (Colombia), it had approximately 100 attendees from Central and South America and Mexico.

Faculty included Claudia Moreno from Colombia; María Eugenia Contreras and Carlos Juri from Chile; María Cecilia Peralta, Daniel Cerqueti, Fabian Piedomente, and Jorge Mandolesi from Argentina; as well as Miguel Wilken, Marina Abraham, Tomás de la Riestra, Federico González del Boca, Mauricio Paez Maggio, Carolina Villa, and Carla Steffani, who presented clinical cases for discussion.

The fundamentals of neuromodulation were reviewed, including deep brain stimulation patient selection for Parkinson's disease, dystonia, and tremor. Indications for both traditional lesions and HIFU, perioperative, and complication management were presented, along with programming principles. Participants were given the opportunity to learn about the various technologies available, and multiple real clinical case presentations were discussed.

The attendees valued what they learned in the course, and the need to maintain this type of activity in the long term is recomended.
