In-home remote assessment of the MDS-UPDRS Part III: Multi-cultural development and validation of a guide for patients

Research Summary

The MDS commissioned the COA Program to conceptualize, develop, and validate the first in-home remote assessment of the MDS-UPDRS Part III to enhance its utilization in novel settings like telemedicine. The MDS-UPDS is the most used scale in Movement Disorders and the gold standard measurement for Parkinson’s Disease (PD).

In this project, we aimed to evaluate the usability of a patient guide designed to facilitate an accurate video-based remote examination of the MDS-UPDRS Part III.

We adopted a mixed-methods approach that included:

1. Team consensus on the guide concept.

2. Cognitive pretesting to understand the acceptability and level of comprehension of the guide.

3. Translation from English to Brazilian Portuguese, Castilian Spanish, and traditional Chinese.

4. Multinational Usability testing with people with Parkinson’s in five sites in the United States, Canada, Spain, Brazil, and Taiwan.

Our study demonstrated the good usability of the MDS-UPDRS Part III In-Home Remote Assessment Guide, emphasizing its value as a tool for optimizing global PD care delivery. This guide supports patients, care partners, and clinicians who choose telemedicine as a means of care.

The MDS-UPDRS Part III In-Home Remote Assessment Guide is a new tool that reinforces telemedicine’s role in bridging healthcare gaps and improving patient outcomes worldwide. It enhances the quality of administering a standardized virtual exam for individuals with PD, aligning with the MDS’s mission.
